Under a blustery snow, a southbound intermodal train exits Fort Montgomery tunnel and crosses ice filled Popolopen Creek. During the revolution, the Continental Army built forts on both sides of the creek inlet, which formed the main southern defenses of the Hudson River in an attempt to deny the corridor to the British. In later days, this important transportation corridor would yield to the railroad, which built on both shores from New York City up to Albany and became the great New York Central System. CSX now operates this line and it sees a great deal of traffic as illustrated by hot intermodal, Q118, on it’s way to Croxton, NJ from Chicago on a wintery January 12, 2011.
