An eastbound Norfolk Southern train approaches the helper pockets at East Conemaugh, Pennsylvania on December 30, 2018. This short intermodal train will proceed through without additional assistance, but most trains stop here to add a helper to get them over the summit. Tying this track maze together are double crossover sets connecting every track to each other, allowing helpers to reach a train on any track.
